Q:
What does Renter's Insurance cover?
A: Renter’s insurance covers items found in the place of residence: clothing, furniture, appliances, electronic equipment, etc. Incidents of burglary or theft, fire, water, or electrical damage and even “freak accidents,” such as damage caused from construction taking place outside your home, or the family pet decides to play a bit too rough with the guests, are all customary to renter’s coverage. Unfortunately, what it will not generally cover are such “luxury items” as jewelry. It would be a good idea to have these items scheduled separately on your policy. Also keep in mind that many insurance companies also offer additional coverage for damage caused due to flooding.
[There needs to be added language regarding the liability coverage of a renter’s policy and protection from claims of guests and others being injured on the premises. Without this it is far less than a full answer]
Q:
What are some tips for saving money on my homeowner's insurance?
A: Orgill/Singer offers the following tips to help save on homeowner’s insurance:
1. Increase your deductible. This is the amount of money you have to pay towards a loss before insurance money takes effect. If you can afford to pay slightly higher deductibles, you can save higher percentages on your premiums.
2. Purchase your home and auto policies from the same firm. Many companies will offer a discount if coverage for both is bought through them.
3. Insurance should be considered when buying a new home versus an older home. A newer home is likely to be in better condition, with newer electrical and plumbing installments. Because of this, companies may offer discounts.
4. Don’t insure the land, only your home. It is not necessary to include the cost of your land when obtaining insurance. Only your home and its contents are at risk of fire, theft and other dangers.
5. Invest in security systems. Burglar and fire alarms can provide discounts due to the improved security measures.
6. If you smoke, quit. Reports show that more than 23,000 home fires are caused from smoking accidents annually. Some insurance firms may offer discounts to those who are non-smokers.
7. If you’re a senior, check for discounts. Because seniors tend to be home more, they have the time to notice and prevent potential mishaps, like fires, and also maintain their homes more.
8. Alumni or business association, or group coverage, may be available if you are an association member. Check with your group’s director about any possible deals.
9. Some insurance companies will offer discounts if you have had your policies with them for several years.
10. Check your policy every year. If you have added expensive items or additions to your household, or gotten rid of them, this could affect coverage amounts.
Automobile Insurance
As Southern Nevada continues to grow at a rapid rate, we are seeing a change in the infrastructure of our highways and surface streets – more and more cars are on the roads, many times intermixed with on-going construction projects leading to an increase in traffic accidents and traffic-related fatalities. Automobile Insurance is not only essential to protect drivers, it’s the law.
An Automobile Insurance Policy protects the driver against financial loss in the event of an accident, including the following provisions:
- Liability Coverage: In the event that you are at fault for the cause of an accident, Liability Coverage handles your legal and financial responsibility to others if bodily injury results.
- Property Damage Liability: Property Damage Liability pays for damage caused by insured to another person’s property, i.e. vehicle, home, commercial business, telephone poles, fences, etc. Property Coverage Liability also covers the cost of your vehicle if damaged or stolen.
- Medical Payments: Auto Insurance will also cover the cost of medical treatments and incurred by the other driver and passengers, rehabilitation, and at times loss of wages and funeral expenses.
- Uninsured Coverage: It isn’t enough to hope that every driver on the road is legally insured. Uninsured Coverage will reimburse you and/or designated driver if your vehicle is hit by an uninsured motorist, or “Hit-and-Run” driver.
- Collision Coverage: Collision Coverage will pay out the damages or total value of your car if you are involved in a collision with another driver or object.
- Comprehensive Coverage: This coverage pays you for the loss of your vehicle if stolen or damage to your vehicle caused by something other than collision by another vehicle or object. For example, if your car damaged from flooding or other natural disasters.

Homeowners Insurance
As thousands of families move to Southern Nevada monthly, finding appropriate Homeowners Insurance becomes a priority as they settle into their new living arrangements.
A Homeowners Insurance Policy provides financial protection if your home is damaged. This covers the structure as well as the contents of the home. A Homeowners Insurance Policy will also provide liability coverage for injuries and damage that guests of your home suffer from you or your pets.
Dwelling: This section of a Homeowners Insurance Policy covers the damage sustained to the structure of your home. It will pay for you to rebuild your home or detached structures such as the garage or shed, if damaged or destroyed by fire, hurricanes, or other disasters explicitly listed in your policy. It will not, however, pay for regular “wear and tear.”
Personal Property: The items inside of your home, such as the furniture, clothing, appliances, etc. are covered if they are stolen, damaged or destroyed. Many polices include an “Off Premises” clause that covers your items regardless of there location in the world. Jewelry and other expensive belongings are covered, but may need additional insurance to cover their entire cost. Trees and plants on your property are covered as well, for a minimal amount, if subject to theft, vandalism, or weather damage with the exception of wind and disease.
Liability: If you find yourself, your family members or your pets legally responsible for the bodily injury to a guest of your home, Homeowners Insurance will cover court costs and court awards afforded to the plaintiff, up to the limit of your policy. If you or your family members or pets cause damage to another person’s home, the same limits apply.
Medical: The injured party can submit their medical costs to your insurance company.
Loss of Use Coverage: If you find yourself displaced from damage or destruction caused to your home, Homeowners Insurance will pay for your additional living costs including hotel bills, restaurant meals and other living expenses while your home is being rebuilt.
Flood Insurance & Earthquake Insurance
While a Homeowners Insurance Policy covers damage incurred by natural disasters, damage inflicted by floods and earthquakes are not included. Homeowners will need to purchase separate Flood Insurance & Earthquake Insurance policies.
